Pre & Post-Summit

The Pre- & Post-Summits for Courageous Conversation will take place on September 27-28, 2008, in advance of the general Summit, and on October 1, 2008, after the general Summit. Advance registration is required to attend the Pre-Summit for Courageous Conversation. Space is limited, so register soon.

Pre-Summit:

Beyond Diversity Institute
Summit attendees who have not previously participated in a Beyond Diversity seminar, or who have not read the book Courageous Conversations About Race by Glenn Singleton and Curtis Linton, are highly encouraged to attend the pre-Summit Beyond Diversity Institute on September 27-28, 2008, or read the book. The themes covered in this Institute will provide a foundation for the language and concepts to be discussed during the three-day Summit.

The Beyond Diversity Institute is a powerful, personally transforming two day seminar designed to help teachers, students, parents, and administrators understand the impact of race on student learning and investigate the role that racism plays in institutionalizing academic achievement disparities. Participants engage in a thoughtful, compassionate exploration of race and racism and grapple with how each influences the culture and climate of our schools. Attendees practice using strategies for identifying and addressing policies, programs, and practices that negatively impact student of color achievement and serve as barriers for ALL students receiving a world-class education.

Equity Leadership in Service Learning (ELSL) Projects
"If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together."
--Lilla Watson

The Summit for Courageous Conversation Equity Leadership in Service Learning (ELSL) Program offers New Orleans educators and their colleagues from around the nation a reciprocal learning opportunity through pre and post-Summit projects that fuse important needs of the New Orleans school systems with the expertise, experience, will power, time, strength and capacity of our Summit attendees and New Orleans educators.

Projects are being designed in partnership between New Orleans educators and Summit organizers. Options may include full-day projects on Saturday and Sunday, September 27 and 28, and half-day projects on Wednesday, October 1. Most projects will be limited to 20 participants each to best support personal connections and transformational engagement.

Watch on this website for full descriptions of the Summit ELSL projects, as they are developed. If you would like to propose a project, please send a message with a brief description of the project to summit@pacificeducationalgroup.com.

The following ELSL project is available for Saturday, September 28, 8 am – 5 pm:

Service Learning and HIV/AIDS Prevention

How can educators be more effective in mobilizing youth action against the HIV/AIDS pandemic? Deepen your understanding of the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on Communities of Color and discover innovative strategies for utilizing service-learning as a tactic for meaningful sex education and youth-led HIV/AIDS prevention. Hear directly from young people of color who are effecting change in their own communities, participate in an HIV/AIDS Health Fair hosted at a local area school, and collaborate on an assessment of challenges and strategies to improve intergenerational HIV/AIDS communication.

This Equity Leadership in Service Learning project offers a rare opportunity to become part of an interactive, vibrant and inclusive HIV/AIDS prevention community that is anchored in research, trained in the best practices of service learning and preventative health care, and supported through a peer assistance network and computer-based HIV/AIDS resources. All participants will receive a free copy of the Service-Learning and HIV/AIDS Toolkit developed by the National Youth Leadership Council.

Check this website frequently for new ELSL projects in development.
